It supports cardiovascular function, improves mood, regulates blood sugar, and helps manage weight. but when it comes to male and female fertility, more isn’t always better. In fact, over-exercising can negatively impact reproductive health in both women and men.

The Female Body - Excessive Exercise
For women, maintaining a delicate hormonal balance is key to healthy menstrual cycles and ovulation. When the body is pushed beyond it’s limits through intense or prolonged physical activity - especially without adequate nutrition, rest and recovery, it can trigger hormonal disruptions.
One of the most common consequences is Hypothalamic Amenorrhea - a condition where menstrual periods stop due to low energy availability and stress on the body. this occurs when the brain senses that the body doesn’t have enough resources to support a pregnancy and so suppresses reproductive hormones like Estrogen and Luteinising Hormone (LH). As a result ovulation may stop altogether.
Low body fat, high cortisol (the stress hormone) and reduced levels of leptin (a hormone produced by fat cells that signals energy availability) all play a role in signaling the body to put conception on hold.
Not only does this affect the body’s ability to conceive naturally, but it can also reduce the effectiveness of assisted fertility treatments such as IVF/ICSI/IUI. A well regulated menstrual cycle is crucial for timing and success if fertility support.
The Male Side - Why Balance Matters for Sperm Health
Men aren’t immune to the reproductive effects of overtraining. High-intensity exercise, especially endurance sports like long-distance running, cycling or weightlifting without proper rest, can suppress testosterone levels, This can lead to reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, poor sperm production and imbalanced hormone levels.
Another concern is oxidative stress - a condition caused by an overproduction of free radicals, which can damage cells. Excessive exercise increases oxidative in the body, potentially harming sperm DNA, motility and morphology [shape]. Poor sperm health is a major contributor to male infertility.
Additionally, frequent cycling or tight workout clothing can raise testicular temperature, which directly affects sperm production and quality.
Finding the Right Balance
The good news is that moderate, consistent exercise can enhance fertility. Activities like walking, gentle strength training, swimming, fertility-focused yoga, and stretching improving circulation, balancing hormones and reducing stress - all of which are beneficial for conception.
The key is listening to your body. If you’re feeling constantly fatigued, noticing changes in your menstrual cycle, experiencing low libido, or feeling run down - your body may be telling you it needs rest.
