Fertility: is one of the major health and wellbeing issues for modern women and men - and is one of human's greatest gift.
When a female is born her entire quota about 2 million of immature eggs are already in situ in the ovaries. Over the course of her early life the number of eggs rapidly decline to around only 60,000. A mere few hundred of these will mature so that they may be released for fertilization. A young girls health throughout her early years all have an impact on a woman's fertility. So physical, emotional, social health and wellbeing during pregnancy is so important as it too can have an impact on female fertility.
When a male is born he has all the parts of his reproductive system in place, but it isn't until puberty [usually between the ages of 9 and 15] that he is able to reproduce. He will then start to produce millions of sperm cells [round cells at birth, then testosterone and other hormones cause the cells to transform into sperm cells] every day.
Males continue to produce sperm from early teens throughout adult life. Sperm counts fluctuate and sperm quality can be affected by illness or lifestyle.
the ability to conceive, reproduce and carry a pregnancy until birth after 12 months of regular unprotected sex.
Fertility depends on many factors, including:
Production of a sufficient number of healthy sperm by the male
Delivery of the sperm into the vagina
The possibility of the sperm being healthy enough to travel the passage up to the uterus and on into the fallopian tubes
Be able to release a mature egg from one of the ovaries [ovulate]
Penetration of a normal ovum [egg] by one of the sperm
Successful implantation of the egg within the lining of the uterus
Women's fertility peeks between ages 22-26, and after 35 it starts to decline dramatically - reducing hormone levels and producing fewer eggs.
